With Mayer Lutheran on a 6-0 run early on its home court, Jordan senior forward Thomas Gutzmer ran down to the other end of the floor. While waiting for the ball to get down to that end, Gutzmer repeatedly told his teammates two words: calm down.

Gutzmer’s message appeared to make a difference. Despite some jabs from the Crusaders, they never got close enough to knock out the Hubmen on Tuesday night as Jordan defeated Mayer Lutheran 62-50. It was the second time this season the Hubmen beat their league foe.

Jordan (18-3, 12-0) and Mayer Lutheran (15-7, 10-2) had established themselves as two of the best teams in the Minnesota River Conference entering Tuesday’s showdown. The only thing separating them in the standings was the Hubmen’s 60-56 win over the Crusaders on Jan. 17. The rematch was an opportunity for Mayer Lutheran to even the season series and tie Jordan atop the standings.
